Chapter Fifteen
Once James got over his shock, he realized he was glad sheâd brought up the topic like this. It might not have been the way he would have liked her to attack the situation, but they were still learning about each other, werenât they? This made him feel better to a certain extent because the truth was, the woman was complicated. She had a lot of layers that he was prepared to peel from her one by one if he had to.
But there was only so much he was willing to let her get away with here. Manhandling didnât make the cut.
âAll right.â He took hold of her hand and spoke calmly. âPlease let go of my shirt. You may stay on my lap, but keep your hands to yourself.â She studied him so he added, âOnce you do what Iâve asked, weâll talk.â
He didnât appreciate her ass wiggling as she got comfortable, but then she sighed and settled in. âIâm ready.â
âDid you take the money?â
âWhat money?â
That answered that.
âDid you take the files?â
She didnât answer and looked away.
That answered that.
He took hold of her chin and forced her to look at him. âWas Logan the one you were speaking to on the Bat phone earlier?â
She scrunched up her nose. âWhy do youâ?â
âAnswer the question please.â
âNo. No, he was not.â
Not a perfect score, but better than heâd hoped. Oddly enough. Considering what mattered most to him at the moment.
âThank you. That makes me happy. Now Iâm going to ask you one question before we begin.â He felt her stiffen and it prompted him to say, âYou donât have to answer if you donât want to.â
Interesting. She relaxed.
âShoot.â
âWhy donât you cry?â
âWho said that?â He caught hold of her so she didnât fall off his lap. Without his help, the way she half-turned, half-jumped to face him, she might have. âI cry. I cried when my mom died.â
He studied her for a long moment. She didnât seem uncomfortable. If anything, she appeared ready to defend her position. âBut not when your dad died.â
And there it was. A flicker⦠of what? Remorse or something else?
She looked away. âI did. You just didnât see me. Wait.â She turned back. Was her chin up a notch? âYou mean at the funeral. I donât cry in front of people. Itâs messy.â
He continued to study her. âIâm not people.â
She studied him now. âYou want me to cry in front of you?â
âYes.â
âWhen?â
He could not believe they were having this conversation. âIâm not going to put it on my Dom calendar or anything. You cry when you need to cry.â
âWow.â She splayed a hand on his chest and began exploring. She was copping an uninvited feel for herself. âDo you like to make women cry?â
Hm. Now that he was forced to think about? âYes.â
She stopped feeling her way around his pec and tilted her head. âWhy? It canât be to make yourself feel manlier, because youâre the manliest guy I know.â
That was a nice compliment, made even better as she didnât seem to know sheâd handed it to him.
